USEFUL WEDDING TIPS

Unveiled, tiara choices

You’ve found the perfect dress, and have either worked with your dress designer or the bridal shop to find the ideal accessories. But what about your hair, and do you go with the modern tiara and/or classic veil – or something else?
Veils are often seen as 'old hat' by younger brides, who often opt for tiaras or flowers worked into their hairstyle; it's all about what you want though, don't feel shackled by tradition or bound by fashion.

Hair
How your hair is done is likely to be guided by your hair type. I recently attended a photoshoot where one of the models had very fine hair; luckily, we were not using any accessories with a comb attachment, or they wouldn't have stayed in her hair for long. For fine hair, a headband-style tiara is ideal and should stay in place nicely.
Talk to your hairdresser about how they attach hair decorations, after all they are the experts. If possible, have the tiara or veil at your hair consultation.
Ask your chief bridesmaid to keep you advised on your hair. When your veil is taken back off your face at the altar, then you go to sign the register you might find your fringe has flattened. Get her to give you a quick check before the photos are taken.
My final thought on hair, being the romantic that I am, is to ask your partner if he likes your hair up or down. Would he prefer to see you as you look on a daily basis, with just a little more glamour, or could he cope with a new look for the day? I think you’ll be surprised how many guys like your most natural look, it’s only us girls that adhere to what we perceive as glamorous.

Veils
If you are getting your whole ensemble from the same shop, you are going to be advised on the type of veil to flatter your dress. If not, beware… I have been to weddings where the bride has swamped her dress with a great big hair monstrosity. One in particular, the groom would have a hard job knowing if he was marrying the right girl! If you're putting the look together yourself, always ask someone you trust to be honest for their opinion. If you're not sure, go for less tulle rather than more, and if your dress is elaborate keep the veil simple. You don't want to distract from the most dazzling thing on display that day – you!

Tiaras
Tiara headbands are really the ‘in’ things. They are easy to wear, and great at staying put all day. For children they are by far the safest option, as the little devils tend to ‘fidget’ if they are not comfortable. Also, they come in a tremendous range of styles, so you're sure to find one that matches your ensemble.

Hair extensions/colour
I love the idea of having a bit of extra length or colour by adding a few extensions. On thing to bear in mind though – a friend of mine had them done specifically for her wedding without a trial run and she left a trail of hair everywhere she walked on the day. She was literally moulting! Trial runs are a worthwhile part of the hair experience.
As I would advise with your dress, keep one of your most trusted friends on hand to give their opinion of your hair and accessories. Also choose a hairdresser you have used a few times before, so you know they are aware of any of your hair's foibles. If you are going to have highlights or any permanent hair treatment get it done gradually over a period of a few months before the wedding.
Talk to your hairdresser about veils and tiaras as soon as possible after you announce the date; they will be able to advise how to grow or cut your hair to best suit the accessories.
